Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease where a ty= pe of immune cell attacks the Myelin sheath around nerves and causes the nerves to misfire or not work at all. It is a bit like an electrical wire that has had the insulation removed and it shorts out where it touches other wires. The cause of MS is not known but is thought to be caused by a virus that activa= tes the immune system to attack myelin. MS is a fluctuating disease where sympt= oms can go into remission then get worse. Some sufferers have symptoms that progress rapidly.
Our view is that demylation and remylation of nerves i= s a natural process that the body uses to remodel the nerve connections in the brain and spinal cord. Recent research backs up this idea where it has been= shown that this process occurs from teenage up to about age 25 years. As far as I know no studies beyond age 25 have been carried = out. In MS this process tends to favour demylation.
The object of our research is to create conditions in = the MS sufferer that favour remylation.
Once immune cells attack the myelin sheath of nerves t= hey produce free radicals to kill the cells. This is a normal process used by t= he immune system to kill infective species in the body. In MS these free radic= als generate a chain reaction of inflammation that results in more cells being killed. The current drug treatments available for MS attempt to damp down t= he immune system. This approach is not entirely successful in that it doesn't = seem to stop the inflammatory response and has unpleasant side effects.
Our experimental diet in theory stops all the known inflammatory processes associated with MS and damps down that section of im= mune system that attacks myelin sheath.
In MS it has been found that there is an acute deficie= ncy of omega three fatty acids in brain tissue. This may well be as a result of disease but it is clear at a biochemical level that correcting this deficie= ncy reduces the inflammatory response associated with MS and creates an environ= ment where remylation is more likely to occur. Publi= shed research indicated that around 21 grams of fish oil a day is required to restore this deficiency. This level of fish oil also seems to damp down the area of the immune system associated with autoimmune diseases.
B group Vitamins are closely associated with nerve fun= ction and we recommend a supplement twice daily.
Vitamin B12 is particularly helpful for MS and we sugg= est a separate supplement for this vitamin(one tablet = a day).
Vitamin D has been shown to be deficient in a number of autoimmune diseases. 1000 IU = of Vitamin D morning and night plus at least 15 minutes in sunlight per day ca= n correct this deficiency. Low Vitamin D levels have been shown to increase muscle pa= in and cause balance problems. Both are common MS symptoms.
Magnesium supplement have been suggested as being help= ful for MS but there is little data backing this up but worth a try as lots of = diet are deficient in Magnesium.
Saturated fats, sugar, caffeine, soft drinks, nicotine= and margarine should be greatly reduced or avoided as they can increase inflammatory response.
Avoid gluten as it has been implicated in causing abno= rmal immune response in autoimmune diseases. Most grain products contain gluten.=
A diet rich in fruit and vegetables particularly purpl= e and red fruits and or vegetables is highly recommended along with deep-sea fish= .
Suggested Regime
Breakfast
Take seven fish oil tablets and apply Rub or take supp= lement of Lipoic Acid. Serve of freshly prepared fruit salad containing wide range= of fruit including at least one acid fruit.
Morning Tea.
Cup of Ginseng tea and fruit.
Lunch
Sardine or Salmon salad containing= wide range of vegetables especially green vegetables. Salad dressing of lemon juice or vinegar with flax seed oil. For variation= a lean serve of cold roast meat is OK. Suggest you cook this for tea night before. Do not use shop prepared meats. Flaxseed oil in any quantity can be used on all meals as a replacement for butter or margarine.
Tea
Deep sea fish and vegetables with preference for green vegetables. Things like spinach and broccoli are important. Lean roast meat, chicken or steak is OK. Tofu is also good. To make Tofu more flavoursome coat in chili and garlic and fr= y in olive oil. Curried lean meat or fish and vegetables at least twice p= er week is recommended. Curry contains some powerfu= l free radical scavengers.
If you cannot live without bread u= se flaxseed oil instead of butter or margarine with your bread.
Build up your fish oil intake gradually, start at 1 pe= r meal and increase by one extra tablet every second day. If you suffer bad reflux= you may have to stop taking fish oil as not all persons can tolerate it. I buy = EnerVite fish oil tablets from Chemi= st Warehouse as they are made in Australia from Australian fish. You can get j= ars of 400 tablets from around $14. Buy up a few when they are on special.
If you find you have signs of respiratory infection cu= t back fish oil to half and take PNP9 included. If respiratory infection continues= cut out fish oil and vitamin D and B12 until it clears.
Apply the special rub morning and night to neck or a f= leshy area of the body. If you experience some skin irritation, try applying to a different area each application. Discard when it starts to smell of rotting meat.
Our Biochemist who was diagnosed with MS in 2005 has controlled<= /span> controlled most of his MS symptoms( He get occasional= eye problems) on 20g a day fish oil, Vit D, B group= and Vit B12 each day with a diet rich in fruit.
