In a recently published paper in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2000(71) Supp 224-7 the role of n-3 fatty acids in reducing mycardial infarction was discussed. For persons who had previously had a heart attack consumption of 4 grams per day of n-3 fatty acids reduced the mortality rate after 2 years by 29%. For persons who have one heart attack and incorporate n-3 fatty acids into a traditional Mediterranean diet the mortality rate is reduced by 70% after 5 years.
